Since then, after being featured on HBO's Insecure, the coffee shop is now backed by showrunner Issa Rae, who's helped Hilltop expand to Inglewood, Eagle Rock and Downtown. And Eagle Rock locations have plenty of tables and a few charging outlets apiece, while the Inglewood shop’s lofted couch seating is more conducive to casual morning or afternoon hangs. This Core City cafe boasts a health-conscious menu for the folks who need a little sustenance, but not the typical pastry-centric fare one might come to expect in a coffee shop. This extra small Oak Cliff coffee shop, owned by wife and husband duo Jeniffer Avilá and Daniel Hinojosa, is an intimate experience. So intimate that there are only two seats, with a few more added outside when the weather permits. With beans from Avilá’s native Honduras in the grinder, coffee lovers can expect a rich cup.

Special events are also held in the oasis like space such as live music and curated dinners. Evolved from a roaster, this straight-forward, funky Second Ward coffee shop stays on the grind, offering warm and iced beverages, plus bottled cold teas and coffee mixes through its walk-up window. Operators obsessed with sourcing the finest coffee beans and mastering roasting and brewing techniques mean that the city’s caffeine culture will continue to thrive. Add in Southern California’s multitude of cultures and the results are excellent pour-overs, espresso drinks, cold brews, Mexican mochas, and cà phê trứng (Vietnamese egg coffee). Here are 19 exceptional coffee bars in Los Angeles. Elegy Coffee comes from the folks behind The Fox, one of Nashville’s best cocktail bars.

Rochester-based roaster Dessert Oasis continues to pour great coffee and espresso drinks at its sprawling, industrial cafe in downtown's Capitol Park area. This third wave cafe has all the typical pour overs as well as freshly baked cakes and cheesecakes. Visit on a weekday and find a mixture of students and working professionals filling the booths and tables.

In addition to the usual suspects, the menu features options like the Bee Sting, an ice espresso with tonic water, honey, and cayenne. This compact spot in the North End Black Coffee Cafe offers a space accented with Afro-centric vibes, both in terms of decor and food. Expect to find vegan pastries, and breakfast and deli sandwiches.

msc cruise line ships

In addition to all of the above, MSC Group — the line's parent company — has announced plans for yet another class of big ships to start arriving later this decade, though there have been few details released. MSC Group also is developing a series of small luxury vessels that'll operate under a separate brand to be called Explora Journeys. Along those lines, MSC Cruises often sends some of its Lirica Class ships to South America, South Africa and the Middle East to operate destination-intensive itineraries with abundant port calls. The vessels also often sail voyages in the Mediterranean that are longer than the seven-night trips that are the norm at MSC Cruises.

The Marina Pool

Outdoor Space

Then there's the MSC Yacht Club experience, mentioned above, which is the ultimate in onboard living. Even with its higher price tag, the MSC Yacht Club still provides great value for its wide range of perks, such as unlimited drinks in all MSC Yacht Club areas, including premium spirits and minibar items. The five Meraviglia and Meraviglia Plus Class vessels also have soaring interior mall-like spaces called Gallerias with bars, restaurants and retail shops, as does the new MSC World Europa. The line's newest ships have teppanyaki restaurants, too, and passengers on MSC Cruises' Seaside Class ships, as well as MSC Meraviglia and MSC Splendida, can dine at a Mediterranean-style seafood restaurant. The biggest suites on MSC Grandiosa, which launched in 2019, span two levels and offer around 635 square feet of interior space, plus another 237 square feet of outdoor balcony space. In North America, MSC Cruises ships have generally sailed out of Miami, but the line recently added Port Canaveral and New York City as home ports, too.

Skyline Restaurant

The ship features 65 percent of her public spaces completely reimagined to enrich the onboard experience and has been extended and enhanced with new entertainment venues, bars and restaurants, and outdoor areas as well as more staterooms and public space. The first of two enriched Seaside EVO-class ships, MSC Seashore is equipped with the latest advanced environmental technology to increase energy efficiency. In addition, the innovative MSC for Me technology provides an enhanced onboard experience by using digital technology to connect guests, crew, and venues via interactive touchscreens around the ship, interactive stateroom TVs, and the MSC for Me app.

MSC Seascape pays tribute to New York City, which as a destination represents the spirit of discovery and cultural experiences that is at the heart of the MSC Cruises guest experience. As such, the design features, public areas and venue names are inspired by the metropolitan U.S. city. These include an imposing three-metre-high replica of the Statue of Liberty at the heart of the casino and a newly designed expansive retail and entertainment area, aptly named Times Square.

While the Switzerland-based company is the third-biggest cruise line in the world, it has far less name recognition among Americans than big U.S.-based lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line. A large percentage of its customers came from countries such as Italy, Germany, France and Spain. MSC Cruises may be the biggest cruise line you've never heard of — assuming you're an American. In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at MSC Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of MSC World Europa. MSC World America is the newest MSC Cruises ship that you can book right now.

By far the most alluring benefit at this level is the 5% discount that members get when booking future sailings (note that this discount is not valid on Tandem and MSC Grand Tours). Say, for example, the total amount of prepaid onboard services that apply to all cabin occupants before the cruise is $600. If there are four cabin occupants, the spending for the points calculation of each member will be $150, which is equal to 100 points. During the day, there's no specific dress code, and people dress casually.

Not including pulldown bunks and pullout sofas, MSC Cruises' 22 ships have 77,832 berths — about 21,000 more than Norwegian's fleet. At its current pace of growth, MSC Cruises could soon pass Carnival to become the world's second-biggest line. All the North America-based ships are marketed heavily to Americans, and the line has tailored some of the features and activities on the vessels to a North American crowd. Immerse yourself in white sand beaches, turquoise waters and Caribbean cuisine. Spend a full day, or two, on our exclusive private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. The Sunset Beach Bar offers delicious Caribbean-style cocktails and punches, like Mojitos and frozen delights, as well as beer, mixed drinks, ciders, softs, fruit juices and alcohol-free cocktails. MSC Seaside offers endless fun for everyone, with a high-tech theater, bowling alleys and an interactive, multi-story water park featuring 5 water slides, an adventure trail and an AquaPlay™ area designed for tots. Three bears, a humpback whale and a bald eagle lingered along our icy path, cementing the magic of spring in Southeast Alaska. We’ll never forget the zodiac cruise rides to see icebergs and glaciers! Our 9 year old twins were particularly impressed by the “vikings” who surprised us with hot chocolate during one of the rides. This was our first ever cruise, so we have no comparison, but we loved this way of seeing Alaska. The views were amazing and the ship’s captain would stop if there was interesting sea life or wildlife spotted.

Set out by expedition landing craft and kayak to get close to the forested banks and the many dramatic waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. The lounge became the gathering place for socializing and the classroom for lectures. In one corner was a bar with various beverages, including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic choices. In the other corner, a small library with games, books, and computers drew guests to relax in this intimate space. For me, the highlight of the trip was seeing glaciers, which I'd never seen in person before. While they weren't as exciting as brown bears or as cute as otters, the beauty and size of these massive blocks of ice left me in awe. Each evening, we received an itinerary for the following day with options to sign up for outdoor excursions, such as hiking and kayaking.

A nice suit jacket and collared shirt for men and comfy dress or pants suit for women work just fine on the ship’s formal nights. I always wear a light rain jacket on my airplane flights to a cruise no matter what time of year. Doesn’t take up room in my luggage, wards off airplane chills and can come in handy on a cruise. I also pack a long sleeve shirt, cardigan and scarves for the heavily air-conditioned ship dining rooms and theaters. Don’t forget your camera, electronic chargers and notebook.

The thin magnetic card given to you in the terminal before boarding the ship or given to you when you have boarded the ship is used to access your cabin and pay for drinks and souvenirs. The cards also are scanned by crewmembers when you leave the ship and when you return so the captain can be assured that everyone is on board. Some cruise ships require that the card be slipped into a slot upon entering your cabin to turn on the lights. It does make it easy to know where your card is when you leave your cabin. But on many of my cruises, I’ve heard first timers trying to find a cabin attendant because the lights in their cabin won’t work.

10 years later, Costa Concordia disaster haunts survivors Los Angeles Times

When the report came out, Captain Schettino had already been arrested, as he was initially placed on house arrest four days after the wreck. Prosecutors referred to Captain Schettino as a "a reckless idiot." He denied all charges and insisted that he was being used as a scapegoat to cover up the failure of the ship's crew. Ortelli was later on hand when, in September 2013, the 115,000-ton, 300-meter (1,000-foot) long cruise ship was righted vertical off its seabed graveyard in an extraordinary feat of engineering. It took a massive operation and $1.5 billion to refloat the Costa Concordia cruise ship. The giant craft will now be towed 200 miles across open ocean before being scrapped. Off the coast of Italy, Costa Concordia is one step closer to being towed to its final resting place.

Reviving the Reef: Environmental Concerns and Salvage Operations

The crisis coordinator for Costa Crociere was involved in the aftermath of the shipwreck, coordinating response efforts and communication in the midst of the tragic events surrounding the Costa Concordia. The Costa Concordia tragedy occurred on January 13, 2012, when the cruise liner struck a reef and began to sink. My involvement in the Costa Concordia scrapping process allowed me to witness first-hand the sophistication and the scale of operations required to counteract the damage.

Trials

Costa Concordia, the Italian cruise ship that sank off the coast of Italy in January 2012, is finally leaving her resting place. The accident has been called one of the worst cruise ship disasters in modern times. During this time, work also began to remove the vessel in what was the largest maritime salvage operation in history. It was not until September 2013 that the 114,000-ton Concordia was finally righted. The 19-hour process involved specially built underwater platforms, cranes, and some 500 people.

grounding and partial sinking

The sunken cruise ship, a convergence of human tragedy and ecological peril, has become an inadvertent monument to both. When Costa Concordia made contract with the rocks off the shore of Italy, some 600 people who had just embarked hours earlier had yet to complete their muster drill. At the time, the safety drill could have conducted at any point up to 24 hours after setting sail.

Costa Concordia disaster

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) — Ten years have passed since the Costa Concordia cruise ship slammed into a reef and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio. Schettino argued that he fell into a lifeboat because of how the ship was listing to one side, but this argument proved unconvincing. In 2015, a court found Schettino guilty of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, abandoning ship before passengers and crew were evacuated and lying to authorities about the disaster. In addition to Schettino, Ferrarini and Rusli Bin, the other people who received convictions for their role in the disaster were Cabin Service Director Manrico Giampedroni, First Officer Ciro Ambrosio and Third Officer Silvia Coronica.

It points to an overarching and pressing need for stringent adherence to the tenets of maritime conduct and the weighty responsibility resting on ship commanders. The ramifications of Captain Schettino’s decisions on that doomed voyage endure, as poignant lessons in accountability ripple through communities and industries worldwide. The severity of the ship’s tilt demanded adaptability and courage, cornerstones of the human spirit in the face of calamity.

concordia cruise

Despite receiving its own share of criticism, Costa Cruises and its parent company, Carnival Corporation, did not face criminal charges. The groundwork laid by this unfortunate event serves as a fulcrum for improved oversight within the maritime domain, reassuring those who venture across the seas. Indeed, the legacy of the Costa Concordia continues to resonate, a steadfast reminder of the cruise industry has responsibility to uphold the highest regard for passenger safety, environmental stewardship, and preparedness. We solemnly remember the concordia deaths that irreversibly marked the Costa Concordia’s profound tragedy. My thoughts persistently drift to the 32 individuals whose lives were unjustly claimed by the cruise wreck, a cruise ship disaster Italy will never forget.

Yet, from the depths of despair, the strength of the human spirit has shone brightly, reminding us of the power of unity in the face of disaster. Per transcripts released by the Washington Post, Captain Schettino confirmed abandoning ship while rescue efforts were ongoing, breaking the maritime tradition of the captain going down with the ship and leaving hundreds of passengers onboard. Evacuation efforts via lifeboats were hindered due to the list of the ship, and many passengers were rescued by boats and helicopters deployed by the coast guard, as the ship's 20 degree list made it difficult to launch lifeboats.

The 114,500 gross ton ship had about 1,500 staterooms and, interestingly, one of the largest fitness centers and spas at sea, which was about 64,600 square feet. The passengers, whose infections were found through random testing, were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, according to the Port of San Francisco. Parbuckling is a centuries-old method that winches a sunken or listing ship upright while it is anchored at a pivot point known as the “deadman.” Sounds simple, right? To hoist it, nine enormous rectangular compartments, called sponsons, will be bolted to the ship, each equipped with a hydraulic pulley; the pulleys lead to 36 steel cables as thick as lampposts that attach to six underwater platforms. NASA said it agrees with an independent review board that concluded the project could cost up to $11 billion without major changes.

Steps include drilling 26 holes in the granite coast to hold pillars for the platforms. The sponsons will be filled with seawater to act as a counterweight as the ship is lifted. Crews have finally completed the salvage and are towing the Costa Concorida to a scrapyard in Northern Italy. Costa sent representatives to the ceremonies and issued a statement saying the company’s thoughts were with the victims and their relatives.

The 10th anniversary is also recalling how the residents of Giglio took in the 4,200 surviving passengers and crew, giving them food, blankets and a place to rest until day broke and they were ferried to the mainland. Giglio’s people then lived with the Concordia’s 115,000-ton, 300-meter (1,000-foot) carcass for another two years until it was righted and hauled away for scrap. Few of the 500-odd residents of the fishermen’s village will ever forget the freezing night of Jan. 13, 2012, when the Costa Concordia shipwrecked, killing 32 people and upending life on the island for years. On January 13, 2012, Costa Concordia hit a rock off the coast of Giglio, an island on Italy's Tuscan coast.
